Abstract

The study deals with changes in land use in the 19th and 20th centuries in Slovenia's alpine region. The aim of the research was not only to study the changes in land use but also to determine the relationship between changes in land use and relief elements and their connection with sociogeographical factors and their development.Land use is a dynamic element of the landscape that is studied with the help of various resources. Special attention was given to determining the accuracy of the sources used to enable a correct interpretation of the results. Because of the uniform and only slightly changed methodology of collecting data employed since the first established stable (Franciscan) cadastre in the first half of the 19th century, it was confirmed that the data on land use from the land register is a very suitable source, primarily for establishing changes in land use over longer periods and for larger spatial units (mezzo-regions, regions), in spite of its otherwise lagging behind the actual situation.

Abstract

Abstract

The book offers multi-layered responses to the scope and causes of spatial, as well as social, economic and physiognomic changes in the cultural landscape in Slovenian countryside. It presents the results of an interdisciplinary research approach to recognising spatial change and trends within a two-year research project entitled “The Transformation of the Landscape by Agricultural Modernisation and Changes in Settlement Patterns”, which was financed by the Slovenian Research Agency and the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Slovenia within the target research programme Slovenian Competitiveness 2006–2013. Similar research was carried out in three pilot areas, selected because they captured a cross section of typical Slovenian landscape macro-units (Mediterranean, Dinaric, Alpine and Pannonian), while also covering the processes of intensification and marginalisation.

Abstract

This handbookpossesses two virtues that are becomingincreasingly dif?cult to ?nd together. The ?rst one is providing a novel and original scheme to analyze the rural areas of the planet in the context of Earth sciences. The handbook is so original in its plan that it actually de?nes what modern rural science is. The scheme followed, albeit new, is rooted in a venerable geographical tradition and presents a sensible balance between the academic and the applied viewpoints. This novel way of stu- ing rural areas represents by itself a valuable contribution to this complex ?eld. The second virtue of the book is the ability of synthesizing the most important aspects of the issues tackled, and there are many issues this book tackles, from physical to human geographyand from deontologyto matrix algebra. When writing a handbook in such a vast ?eld as rural science, it is indeed tempting to accumulate meaninglessinformationassisted by the wealth of available on-lineinformation. On the other side, the danger of forgetting essential aspects is always present. None of these problems seems to have affected the making of this book. The pictures and tables always have a place, the text never looses its coherence, and no comment seems super?uous. Also, the ambitious scope of the book is seemly effortlessly solved by a rational, clear, and logical scheme that dissects all the relevant issues up to the required point.

Abstract

Throughout history, humans have lived primarily in rural landscapes. In 2008, for the first time, the global population became predominantly urban. While much research has focussed on the impacts of increasing urbanisation, we have very little knowledge of the implications of these changes for rural landscapes. Global trends suggest populations in rural landscapes are, relatively speaking, in decline. Yet this broad trend is too simplistic and can be very misleading for researchers, land managers and policy makers. This generalisation often masks a much more complex and dynamic process of demographic change, with some rural areas increasing in popularity and experiencing new environmental pressures. The patterns of change can be broadly characterised in two ways: population decline and dissolving rural communities; and amenity-led in-migration (or counter-urbanisation) – a trend identified in developed regions such as North America and Australia. Both of these patterns have substantial implications for the management and sustainability of rural landscapes and communities. This book examines broad and local-scale patterns of demographic change in rural landscapes, identifying some of the drivers of these changes using local case studies, and outlining the implications of changes for society and the environment. The book adopts an interdisciplinary approach by explicitly linking demographic change with environmental, land-use, social and economic factors. The book will provide a useful resource for researchers and graduate students interested in urban development, sustainability science, landscape studies and demographic change, as well as environmental management, human and physical geography and rural sociology.
